When I first learned about Knix and their innovative period underwear, I was a postpartum mom feeling a low sense of confidence. I was tired of wearing adult diapers and thick sanitary pads, and it was in the middle of the night nursing my infant. I stumbled across Sarah Landry’s (@thebirdspapaya) Instagram page wearing a pair of Knix, I was convinced I needed to try them, and here we are, 4.5 years later writing a Knix Period Underwear Review.
No, Knix isn’t paying me to write this review.
I’m writing it because that one night 4.5 years ago when I stumbled on the Instagram post talking about these leakproof underwear, I had a moment of inspiration. I thought to myself “if these period underwear actually work, I can finally do things outside of the house feeling comfortable again”.
For context, I wasn’t able to use tampons or other menstrual products (you can learn more here).
It took about 1.5 weeks for my order to arrive, I ordered their standard high-rise leakproof panty and by the time I got it, I was on the tail end of my period. Yes, I’m one of those unlucky moms who got her period back way too soon after having a baby.
So, I threw the undies on, I was scared as heck they wouldn’t actually work and that I had just wasted close to $40 on a single pair of underwear, but to my surprise, they worked.
Not only did they work, they were seamless and felt like the most smooth and comfortable pair of underwear I have EVER owned.
So naturally, I ordered a couple more.
Over the years, I have had the privilege to purchase more of their products and eventually became a Knix Ambassador. That is how much I believe in this product, but I know you want more of the juicy details.
Such as how much do these things cost? How much can they absorb? What sizes do they come in? And I promise I’ve got all those details coming right up.
Introducing, Knix.
A Canadian-founded brand, Knix is an inclusive and body-positive intimate apparel brand founded by Joanna Griffiths.
Instead of making more “sexy” and “cutesy” lingerie that already dominated the industry around 2013, Joanna shook things up by introducing a product that looked and felt beautiful while being functional above all: it was leakproof underwear.
And while functionality was at its core, Knix was also dedicated to bringing a sustainable and ethical approach to their underwear (& other products).
In fact, you can easily access their product testing & safety results on their website, something I appreciate as a consumer.
Lastly, Knix is a brand that is devoted to using women of all ages, sizes, and backgrounds on their website and in their marketing imagery.
I think this speaks volumes for so many women like myself who find themselves with those lingering stretch marks, loose skin, and on the curvier side. To see a product modeled by a woman with an everyday, realistic body type is such a breath of fresh air.
Knix Period Underwear Review, Does It Work?
How Does Knix Leakproof Underwear Work?
My friends, the leakproof power is in the multi-layered gusset. As you can see below, each of these underwear has a slightly different gusset.
Each layer of the gusset works together to provide the ultimate leakproof protection: anti-odor, moisture-wicking, and absorbent fabric. However, the thickness & length vary slightly by the absorbency level of the underwear.
For example, the ultra-light leakproof is much thinner compared to the Dreamshorts which has a longer and thicker gusset. And yet despite thickness, what Knix does that’s so unique is they’ve been able to make these absorbable gussets move freely with your body, without feeling stiff or bulky.

Styles, Absorbency, and Other Leakproof
Now that we know how Knix underwear works, let’s discuss the styles, absorbency levels, and other leakproof products they have available.
I will tell you right now that my personal favorite is the High-Rise Leakproof along with the Dream Shorts. The High-Rise is what I lived in postpartum and aside from the leakproof magic, I was obsessed by how well the material smoothed out my belly.
I obviously had that soft mom belly with loose skin post-birth and the High-Rise Undies helped me feel held together without compressing me or being a thick material, they were just the definition of comfort.
Now, let’s dive into the other styles, absorbency levels, and products.
Styles:
Bikini
Has medium hip and butt coverage with a classic mid-rise silhouette.
Cheeky
Designed to be a low-rise fit with less butt coverage to show off those cheeks!
Boyshort
Featuring a mid-rise silhouette with more full coverage through the hip and butt.
Dream Shorts
Hugs your body along the waist and stays in place all night long thanks to its stretchy PerformaStretch fabric. These are my go-to EVERY night when I’m on my period and I’ve never once had a leak.
High-Rise
Sits above the belly button at your natural waistline providing full to medium hip and butt coverage.
Thong
Features a mid-rise silhouette with very minimal butt coverage and also comes in a front high-rise option for higher-waisted support.
French Cut
This classic cut features a high cut above the leg with high-waist coverage.
Reusable pads
These come in daytime and overnight options as one has a shorter gusset while overnight has a longer gusset. They feature an easy snap closure to stay put all day or night long.
Absorbency Levels:
- Zero: These panties are part of the “essential” line, meaning they aren’t meant to absorb any liquids. A great option when you’re not on your period, sweating a lot or postpartum.
- Lightest: Can hold up to 0.5 – 1 regular tampon worth of liquid.
- Light: The next level up that can absorb up to 1-3 super tampons worth of liquid.
- Medium: Absorbs about 2-3 super tampons’ worth.
- Heavy: Can absorb about 3-6 super tampons’ worth of liquid.
- Ultra: Perfect for heavy period days or overnight protection, the ultra absorbency can hold up to 7-9 super tampons’ worth.
Other Leakproof Products Worth Noting:
- Thigh Savers: These smooth, breathable, and lightweight shorts are perfect during summer to prevent thigh chafing and sweat while wearing your favorite skirts and dresses. Plus, it comes in a leakproof option and contouring option for those wanting more of a shapewear style.
- Bras: Knix has mastered the art of creating supporting bras for breasts of all sizes without using a bulky wire design. I’ve recently tossed out all my old bras and solely use Knix.
- Active/Leggings: If you’ve ever tried Knix and appreciate the smooth, second-skin-like material they use, you will love their leggings. Not only do they wick moisture and have leakproof options, but they also hold you in place without excessive compression.
- Pajamas: Their pajamas are so soft, buttery, and breathable. I always feel like a get a slightly better sleep whenever I go to bed wearing them.
- Swim: You know a brand will make swimwear for women RIGHT when they’re including all bodies in their designs. As a mom, I appreciate their high-waisted and one-piece swimsuits along with their leakproof options.
- Maternity: Although I haven’t tried their maternity line directly, I think it’s worth noting that they have one. From their postpartum core love leakproof underwear to their supportive nursing top, it might be worth adding to your baby shower gift list!
Pros & Cons of Using Knix Period Underwear
Now with any product, it’s not all rainbow and butterflies. And if you’re planning to splurge on a few pairs for yourself, let me share some of the pros and cons I’ve experienced as a consumer (later turned ambassador) who’s been using these for 4+ years.
Pros: Many absorbency and style options to choose from.
Pros: Uses soft, seamless materials.
Pros: Knix is very transparent about product materials and testing.
Pros: They hold 1-2 big sales every year making their products even more affordable.
Pros: Their return & exchange policy is one of the best and totally effortless, check it out before you buy!
Cons: The price is a bit higher than others and what I’d normally pay for underwear (but remember, you can reuse them over and over again).
Cons: Being a Canadian-based brand, sometimes shipping can take 1-2 weeks before receiving the item.
Cons: The product may feel more snug during first wear (but it’s intentional as it will gently stretch to hug your body comfortably)
How Long Will Knix Leakproof Underwear Last?
There is no set timeframe to how long this underwear can last, however, Knix does say that “with proper care they can last a prolonged period of time”.
After being an avid customer of their products, I can definitely tell you that proper washing and drying of these products will help them last quite a long time. I have used many of my leakproof underwear for 3-4+ months at a time without them losing any of their absorbency or developing any sort of smells or stains.
