What is a Prenatal Chiropractor?
A prenatal chiropractor are those who have received extra education and are certified to work with pregnant (expecting) women.
Oftentimes, you’ll see these Prenatal Chiropractors will specify that they use The Webster Technique.
The Webster Technique is practiced with pregnant women specifically because it aims to safely adjust and restore the pelvic alignment and it’s function.
However, Prenatal Chiropractors don’t just stop at pregnancy. They also are very well-versed in helping moms throughout their postpartum recovery as well.
How Often Should I Go To The Chiropractor While Pregnant?
If you opt to get prenatal chiropractic care, you’ll want to head in for your initial visit and formulate a plan with your chiropractor to determine how often you’ll need to see them during your pregnancy.
Why isn’t there a cookie-cutter answer? Because pregnancy is different for everyone!
For example, I tend to get SPD pain during my pregnancies which caused me to need to see my chiropractor once every week, and then we dropped down to once every 2 weeks.
Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy: 7 Benefits You Never Knew
If you’ve never considered seeing a Chiropractor during your pregnancy, you may want to reconsider.
Of course, get the clearance from your doctor, but don’t brush off seeking this care simply because you’ve never heard of it before.
Though, if you have any kind of health conditions such as abnormal bleeding or ectopic pregnancy, it’s usually not recommended to seek out chiropractic care (this is something your provider will let you know).
1. Can help to alleviate SI joint dysfunction or SI joint pains.
If you’ve ever felt that sharp pain across your hip, usually radiating across your back during pregnancy — say hello to SI joint pain.
This extremely uncomfortable side effect is pretty common, but thankfully, routine Chiropractic care during your pregnancy can help!
Your Chiropractor will focus on evaluating your joint’s instability from head to toe. Then, they can make the proper adjustments necessary to provide more stability, alignment, and comfort to your joint.
This is something I experienced during both of my pregnancies and thanks to Chiropractic care, I was able to get some relief the 2nd time around.
On top of weekly appointments with an amazing Prenatal Chiropractor, she had me wear a pelvic support girdle (this is the exact support belt I used) to ensure my posture was staying aligned.
Needless to say, I only wished I had seen a Chiropractor the first time around.
2. Helps to align the pelvis for delivery.
A lot of women underestimate how the alignment of your pelvic can affect the way your delivery outcome turns out.
For example, one of my favorite websites is called Spinning Babies. They share some of the BEST information about baby position, pelvic shape, and more!
Thankfully, consistent Chiropractic care can help you keep your pelvis aligned. With proper alignment comes more room for baby to flip into the right position and fit through the birth canal.
Not to mention, if your nerves finally aren’t being overly compressed due to all those loose joints and misalignments, your body should be able to contract effectively so you can progress through labor pretty smoothly.
All win-wins for a pregnant mom preparing for labor and delivery.
3. May decrease the risk of a breech pregnancy.
As mentioned above, having proper pelvic alignment allows baby more room to get themselves into the appropriate head down position for birth.
This is where Chiropractic care (and specifically the Webster Technique) starting early in pregnancy can really help.
To clarify, a Chiropractor will NOT try to spin your baby into place. Instead, they focus on creating more space so that baby can safely turn themself into position.
The catch? Unfortunately, there’s aren’t enough studies out there to say this method REALLY works for everyone, but according to the limiting studies out there, they show some pretty promising results!
This study from 2002 showed a success rate of 82% during the 8th month of pregnancy.
4. Might help control the feelings of nausea.
For some women, having their spine and pelvic aligned can help to reduce unnecessary pressure to your nervous system, in return, help you to say BYE to nausea (or morning sickness).
However, if that doesn’t quite do the trick completely, try adding in some tummy soothing ginger drops to help out!
I used these ginger drops by Upspring and though they didn’t relieve all of my pregnancy morning sickness, they did make it so that I could survive the day.
5. Can help reduce common aches and pains associated with pregnancy.
Backaches? SI joint pains? Sore feet? Symphysis pubis dysfunction? Let your chiropractor help!
I won’t lie, I was completely skeptical about chiropractic care with my first. I suffered through so much pain I wish I didn’t.
That’s why with my 2nd, I found a chiropractor who specialized in prenatal care and went to weekly adjustments so I could feel comfortable again!
It isn’t just about aligning your spine and calling it a day. It’s about aligning your spine so that the other major parts of your body can also align, get better support, and stop being so compressed.
6. Help you regain your center of gravity and minimize injuries.
It’s no surprise that your growing belly can cause your usual center of gravity to be thrown off, especially in those later months of pregnancy.
Let your chiropractor help you realign your body and in turn, help you regain some of that center of gravity back.
Plus, you might physically feel a little less clumsy and more in control of your body again.
7. Might help you get more sleep.
You’re probably wondering how chiropractic care during pregnancy can help you get more sleep, right?
Well, imagine this — when you’re not in constant pain, your balance is on point, and your nausea isn’t as bad; doesn’t that sound like a pretty sweet recipe to help a pregnant mom sleep?
I know for me, I struggled to sleep due to my symphysis pubis dysfunction and SI joint pains. I used SO many pregnancy pillows (this one worked the best of them all) and it wasn’t until I received constant Chiropractic care that I found relief.
