Consuming healthy meals, keeping up with the housework, breastfeeding my baby, and balancing motherhood can be quite the challenge. However, I was recently gifted a subscription box by a company known as SmoothieBox to review — and I think I finally found a go-to solution to make healthy living an EASY part of my day-to-day life as a breastfeeding mom…hello delicious smoothies for breastfeeding moms!
Why didn’t I think of it before? Of course, breastfeeding smoothies are a great way for new moms to consume healthy nutrients that support their breast milk production all at the same time!
In this article, we’ll be talking about how SmoothieBox makes the prep work even easier and some breastfeeding smoothie recipes you can try out for yourself.
This post is NOT sponsored by SmoothieBox, however, they did gift me this box of all their delicious options to review. Please know the opinions of this post are solely my own.
Lactation Smoothies for Breastfeeding (ft. SmoothieBox)
When I breastfed my first son, we had tons of breastfeeding problems that led to me almost losing my supply multiple times.
Finding lactogenic foods and recipes to eat that could support my milk supply truly became crucial and if I’m being honest, very stressful.
With my 2nd, I’ve been fortunate to have a much better supply, but I still take caution to make sure I consume a healthy diet that includes lactation friendly snacks and meals.
The struggle to find the time to always make these snacks and meals was my struggle this time around because mom life of two under two is no joke.
That’s why it’s no surprise when I had the opportunity to try out SmoothieBox, I was pretty stoked, to say the least. Plus, if I ended up enjoying these smoothies, I knew I’d be able to share it with all of you to make your lives a bit easier too!
What is SmoothieBox?
SmoothieBox is a subscription-based delivery service that delivers healthy, ready to blend smoothies to your door!
They take the hassle out of the cutting and preparing your own healthy foods (like fruits/veggies and micronutrients) by doing it for you & turning it into a healthy breakfast alternative — making it great for busy moms, breastfeeding moms, working moms, or anyone short on time/on-the-go.
Some other unique features that set SmoothieBox apart from their competitor brands is that they offer 100% FREE shipping on all orders, contain NO additives, and offer their exclusive grass-fed collagen peptides as a way to get more protein!
What flavors does SmoothieBox have?
SmoothieBox offers 4 delicious ready to blend flavors along with their grass-fed collagen peptides.
Clementine Flavor
Do you remember those creamsicle pops they’d give after school when you were waiting for your parents to pick you up? LOL, I do! Anyways, this flavor took me back to those days. Tasting like an orange creamsicle BUT with a distinct ginger-y zest! Now, I’m actually not a huge fan of ginger so the next time I make this flavor I think I will blend it with some pulp-filled orange juice to try and mask the ginger.
SmoothieBox’s Clementine flavor contains the following ingredients: Mandarin, Organic, Sweet Potato, Organic Carrots, Organic Ginger, Organic Coconut Cream, Organic Lemon Juice, Organic Pumpkin Seeds, Organic Coconut Water, and Organic Dates.
Cacao Flavor
My personal favorite flavor is Cacao. This is because SmoothieBox has a DELICIOUS Fiber Boost Smoothie Recipe that tastes more like a treat than a healthy smoothie. Plus, you all know how much I love my coffee, so I experimented a bit and made myself a “Cold-brew Cacao Smoothie” that was just the best ever.
SmoothieBox’s Cacao flavor contains the following ingredients: Organic Bananas, Organic Zucchini, Organic Kale, Organic Coconut Water, Organic Sunflower Seeds, Organic Banana Puree (Organic Banana, Citric Acid, Ascorbic Acid), Organic Coconut Cream, Organic Cacao Nibs, Organic Cacao Powder, and Sea Salt.
Berry Flavor
To me, this flavor had the MOST classic smoothie flavor amongst them all. I blended mine with the grass-fed collagen peptides, a little bit of milk, and 1/2 scoop of my Alani-Nu Berry Cereal protein powder.
SmoothieBox’s Berry flavor contains the following ingredients: Organic Wild Blueberries, Organic Strawberries, Organic Cauliflower, Organic Sweet Potato Puree, Organic Banana Puree (Organic Banana, Citric Acid, Ascorbic Acid), Organic Raw Hemp Seeds, Organic Lemon Juice, and Organic Beet Juice.
Green Flavor
Believe it or not, the green flavor is my 2nd favorite. I think it’s because I KNOW it has lots of lactation friendly ingredients and with the right liquids added, doesn’t taste like a mouthful of chalk, but instead like a refreshing, energy filling, smoothie!
SmoothieBox’s Green flavor contains the following ingredients: Organic Chopped Spinach, Organic Granny Smith Apples, Organic Avocado, Organic Pineapple, Organic Lemon Juice, Organic Apple Juice, Organic Flax Seed, and Organic Hemp Hearts.
Strawberry Banana **New Flavor – Not Pictured**
I sadly have not been able to try the latest flavor since it has been released. However, Strawberry Banana smoothies have always been one of my favorites!
SmoothieBox’s Strawberry Banana flavor contains the following ingredients: Organic strawberries, Organic Bananas, Organic Sweet Potato Puree, Organic Raw Hemp Hearts, Organic Lemon Juice, Organic Beet Juice, Organic Cauliflower, and Organic Banana Puree.
Why is SmoothieBox GREAT for breastfeeding mothers?
The part you’ve all been waiting for…WHY is SmoothieBox so awesome for us breastfeeding moms?
Well, if you take a peek at the ingredients listed above, you can see that many of them are known for being pretty lactation friendly!
A few examples include:
Spinach & Kale — Spinach & most leafy greens contain tons of phytoestrogens & micronutrients that breastfeeding moms can benefit from! Spinach is also considered to be a galactagogue.
Flax Seed — Known for having estrogenic properties to not only help moms maintain their breast milk supply, but also increase their supply.
Avocados — A great source of healthy fats including fiber that can help aid in digestion for both mom & baby [SOURCE].
As you can see, the natural healthy ingredients that SmoothieBox uses in their ready to blend smoothies can have some tremendous benefits for lactating moms!
I’ve only made 4 smoothies so far, but I’m really excited to continue using this subscription and see how my milk supply responds!

Why are Smoothies for Breastfeeding Moms Beneficial?
Unlike other lactogenic snacks, smoothies can be a much healthier alternative in providing a full meal AND support your production of breast milk.
For example, lactation cookies are popular galactagogues moms turn to when they have low milk production or want to increase their milk supply. Unfortunately, many of these snacks are loaded with a ton of sugar and unnecessary calories (but they sure are tasty).
With healthy smoothies, you can curb your sugar cravings while consuming things like dark leafy greens, lots of fruits, minerals, and natural ingredients.
My SmoothieBox Review (from a lactating mom)
My favorite part, my personal review!
I mentioned that I was excited to keep drinking these smoothies so it’s not a surprise that I do enjoy them and see the amazing health benefit they offer, especially for breastfeeding moms like myself.
I decided to break this review up into a few parts that I know are important when it comes to decided whether or not a subscription service like this is worth it, I hope you find it helpful!
The flavor
Overall, I believe the flavor is good. When you blend them without any juices or flavored waters, some of them like the green or clementine can taste a little bit “too natural” for some.
What I mean by too natural is that they don’t have that added sweet taste that many crave when they drink a smoothie.
However, by adding some juice or flavored waters it really helps give the smoothies a smoother taste and I really do love it. It just feels refreshing to drink something so natural & healthy in the mornings (especially when I’m running on low sleep and need that pick me up).
The Nutrition
As you can see in the photo below, SmoothieBox does a fantastic job of showing their ingredients & nutritional breakdown on each smoothie bag (which comes with 2 servings/bag).
I also love that they do not add any unnecessary sugars to their smoothie blends. At most, their bags contain no more than 10 grams of sugar per serving. That’s pretty impressive considering other big brand smoothies contain upwards of 100 grams of sugar.
Now, I’m not afraid of drinking sugar, but I do believe there’s no need to add it when fruit is already naturally sweet as is.
Another point I love about their nutrition is that they use a lot of lactation friendly ingredients making it a powerhouse mix for lactation smoothies for breastfeeding.
The Convenience
When you become a mom, it seems like everything becomes about convenience.
SmoothieBox makes it SO easy for moms to blend up a quick, healthy, and delicious breakfast (or any meal you choose) smoothie.
One little trick I did with the leftover mixture I couldn’t finish — I used a popsicle mold for my toddler to pour in the mixture and let him have a delicious healthy smoothie pop after running around on a warm day and guess what? HE LOVED IT!
So…I found a meal replacement for me AND a little cool snack for my toddler to enjoy.
The Price
I received my first box 100% free of charge for this review and I am so grateful for SmoothieBox for being willing to offer that to me.
When you use my promo code FITMOMMYSTRONG which saves you $15 off your first SmoothieBox order subscription, you end up paying $4.20/smoothie for a total of 20 smoothies without the collagen.
If you don’t use my promo code, you end up paying $4.95/smoothie for a total of 20 smoothies without the collagen.
Depending on where you live, the average cost of a Jamba Juice smoothie runs around $5.25 – $6.82 AND contains significantly more sugar.
When you think about the VALUE (quality + quantity) you receive per smoothie I do believe the price is affordable.
If the upfront cost is too much for you, then it may not be the best option for you at the time, but I do think it’s worth a shot to try and you may find it can help you maintain your breastmilk supply, support your breastfeeding journey, and create healthy day to day nutritional habits — and that’s worth it to me!
Get in extra protein with this Lactation Protein Shake Recipe:
Below are two recipes I opted to make! The first one with my favorite flavor Cacao and my favorite drink COFFEE!
- 1 serving pack of SmoothieBox Cacao Bag
- 1 TBSP Nut Butter of Choice (almond butter is always a good choice)
- 4 ounces of milk (can use almond or any milk you prefer)
- 4 ounces of cold brew coffee
- 1 scoop Chocolate Protein Powder of choice (I use Quest Chocolate Milkshake)
Add all the ingredients into the blender, blend until smooth, & enjoy!
If you want to make it extra fancy or turn it into an indulgent treat, feel free to top it off with some shaved dark chocolate slivers or even low-fat whipped cream! Otherwise, enjoy it as is knowing you’re drinking a healthy smoothie that tastes like a sweet guilty milkshake!
Berry Smoothie Recipe
The 2nd recipe I decided to try was their PB&J Smoothie Recipe which you can snag the full recipe yourself from their handy little recipe book (sorry, no spoilers on this one, but don’t worry it’s simple and doesn’t require many extra ingredients at all)!
This recipe has lots of nutrients, healthy fats, low calories, low sugar, and is SO refreshing! See for yourself!
These aren’t the only recipes you can make with SmoothieBox. Visit their recipe page for even more easy smoothie recipes with great nutrition and health benefits.
With SmoothieBox, even the busiest breastfeeding mamas can whip up easy lactation smoothies in a matter of minutes. Say goodbye to scavenging your local grocery store for every single ingredient and let SmoothieBox make it easy for you!
