Sonic the Hedgehog and I go way back, I’m talking back to the Sega Genesis and Dreamcast video game days. So you can only imagine my excitement when my 4 year old told me he wanted a Sonic The Hedgehog Birthday Party. I immediately began searching for party decor and supplies to throw him an amazing Sonic themed birthday party.
To my surprise, there weren’t that many Sonic party supplies available. With the last Sonic movie being out in theatres, I thought for sure I’d be able to find exactly what I needed, but it turned out to be a bit of a challenge. One I happily accepted, of course!
That said, I immediately knew I needed to document our Sonic birthday party and share it here on the blog, so here we are! Whether you’re looking for creative ideas to turn a traditional cake into a Sonic cake with all their favorite characters or how to decorate for your party on a budget, we’ve got all the details & sonic the hedgehog birthday party ideas below!

Party Planning a Sonic Birthday
One of the most important parts of planning any birthday is knowing where it’ll be hosted. This will determine where you can decorate, what kind of party decor you’ll need, the food you’ll be serving, and more!
So here are a few places you could consider having your Sonic party:
- At home
- At a local park
- An Indoor Trampoline park (Like Skyzone or Get Air)
- Amusement Parks
- Bowling Alley
- Kid’s Indoor Play Spaces
There are truly more areas where you could host your child’s birthday party, but these tend to be the most popular and affordable options.
Since my kids are still young, we like to opt for parties at home as I find it easier to set up and plan (aside from cleaning like a mad woman before the party). If you need house-cleaning tips to prepare for a party, you can find those over on this post.
Sonic The Hedgehog Birthday Decorations
Now, for the fun part, getting your decorations and mapping out your vision. I don’t know about you, but I love finding inspiration for birthday party ideas on Pinterest. Whether you need ideas on what kind of sonic birthday decorations to use or how to decorate for the party, I feel like there’s always endless inspiration on Pinterest.

For our Sonic the Hedgehog Party, I decided to have the main decoration be this absolutely adorable, customized party banner! And guess what? It was SO EASY to make.
I paid for the graphic on Etsy (this one to be exact), then uploaded it into Canva and created the entire banner design in Canva as well. Then I exported my design and ordered this banner from Amazon.
Like I said, it was so easy, and overall super cheap for being a full-on custom party banner. I also wasn’t expecting the quality to be so good, considering how cheap it was, but it was fantastic, and I still have the banner folded up in my closet post-party to this day.
Next, the balloons! I have a love-hate relationship with balloons because they take quite the effort to set up, but thankfully, I was able to find a balloon arch kit on Amazon that simplified the process. I kept the design very simple and just did more of a traditional L-shaped balloon arch around the banner. To help keep the banner and balloons up, I used this backdrop stand (another great & affordable Amazon purchase).
The final part of our party decorations consisted of our dessert table, which I put together on our kitchen countertop. I made a homemade Sonic theme Birthday cake (more on that below), along with some mini-cake bites using leftover cake frosting, cake pops, and lastly a cute little dessert sign that I made & printed at home via Canva.
I also went to Target to grab some Sonic-themed plates & napkins. Then I went to a local party store to pick up some mini-sonic toys for the Sonic-themed party favor bags and a Sonic piñata. I mean, is it really a legit party if the kids aren’t wacking a piñata for some candy to take home?

Sonic Party Favors & Goodie Bags
My motto when it comes to making goodie bags for birthday parties is that simple is best. We do our best to ensure the kids have loads of fun, which is why I’m ok having a less is more mentality. Plus, I like to make sure that whatever we fill our bags with will be something the kids will actually use or play with and not go directly into the trash. Typically, I’ll do a small toy, some sort of snack, and a sensory-friendly toy or activity.
Because of that, I filled some Sonic-themed party bags with blue, red, and yellow sensory pop tubes, Sonic tattoos, some Sonic fruit snacks, and some small Sonic toys from a local party supply store.

While I know some people don’t like giving out goody bags, we have fun giving our guests a little something, even if it’s small. These are the EXACT ITEMS we used to fill our party bags:
- Colorful Sensory Pop Tubes
- Sonic Fruit Snacks
- Sonic Tattoos
- Small Toys from the party store — unfortunately, I couldn’t find them online, but these are pretty similar to the ones I got!
DIY Sonic Birthday Cake
When you think of Sonic the Hedgehog, you probably think of golden rings, chaos emeralds, a blue hedgehog, and, of course, his super cool friends like Knuckles, Amy, and Tails! So, when it came down to making my son’s Sonic-inspired cake, I knew I needed to find a way to incorporate most of these elements.
However, there was one major caveat: I am NOT a baker!
In fact, I’ve never really made a cake aside from simple box cakes before in my life. And that’s when I became VERY determined to not only make a cool cake, but to make a cool cake that tastes delicious.
Good thing YouTube had a lot of helpful videos to help a mom like me make a cool cake. My top favorite channels that I found most helpful were:
Seriously, if you’re trying to learn a thing or two about baking a cake from scratch at home and have it taste like a professional made it — check out the pages I listed out above!

Now, onto the cake itself. My son requested a cookies n’ cream cake (aka: LOADED with Oreos) because it’s his favorite cookie. So I made the cake using Preppy Kitchen’s Cookies N’ Cream recipe (with a few variations ofmy own).
For the filling and frosting, I used a Cream Cheese Buttercream (which is different than what Preppy Kitchen uses). I did that because I didn’t want the cake to be too sweet, and it turned out SO good!
For the filling, I added in crushed Oreos (which is as simple as taking 10-16 Oreos, and using a roller to crush them while leaving some chunks for texture) and gently folded them into the frosting.
For the outer frosting, I applied a crumb coat and then used this royal blue gel food coloring to achieve the blue color and frosted the entire cake with it. I also made a small batch of yellow frosting to use for decorating. I added a custom Sonic the Hedgehog Cake Topper along with some sprinkles and a small Sonic Toy to tie it all together.
I know you’re probably wondering if the buttercream was stable, considering it has cream cheese, and yes, it held its shape without melting or losing its consistency so nicely.

I also used a sheet pan like this to make a simple funfetti sheet cake, then I cut it into small squares and stacked them in a cupcake liner to make some small 2-tier mini-cake bites to go along with our cake and give our guests another flavor option to choose from.
Lastly, I made Oreo cookie cake pops! It was incredibly easy to make these, and they were a huge hit at the party (it was also my very first time ever making these). All you need is a 24-pack of Oreo cookies, 4oz of cream cheese, cake pop sticks, and your choice of candy melts or chocolate melts.

Sonic Party Food Ideas (& What We Did)
If you’re looking for Sonic-inspired party food ideas, the best choice is chili dogs. Why? Because it’s Sonic’s favorite food ever, duh! The only downside is that we had a lot of young guests who weren’t big chili dog fans…so I opted to get the next best thing and keep it simple: Costco Pizza. The rest of our menu consisted of:
- Chips
- Fresh fruit
- Lemonade, water, juices, and iced tea
Since our food didn’t entirely reflect the party theme all too well, I made sure to serve em’ up on blue plates and Sonic the Hedgehog party plates. It’s the little details anyway, right?
